On February 11, 2014, Queen became the first act in the United Kingdom to sell six million copies of a single album. This record was set by their 1981 compilation album, “Greatest Hits.” According to The Official Charts Company, one in three households in the UK owns the album, which features iconic tracks such as “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Another One Bites The Dust,” “Killer Queen,” “Somebody To Love,” “Bicycle Race,” “You’re My Best Friend,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” “Save Me,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “Now I’m Here,” “Play The Game,” “Flash,” and “We Are The Champions.”

The Story of “You’re My Best Friend”

The song “You’re My Best Friend” was written by bassist John Deacon, specifically for and about his wife, Veronica Tetzlaff. It originally appeared on the 1975 album “A Night At The Opera” before being released as a single.

The single’s chart performance was impressive:

  • UK: Reached #7

  • US Billboard Hot 100: Reached #16

  • Netherlands Top 40: Reached #9

On the studio recording of “You’re My Best Friend,” John Deacon played a Wurlitzer electric piano in addition to his bass guitar part. However, during live performances, Freddie Mercury played the piano part. Following “Killer Queen,” “Now I’m Here,” and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the track became Queen’s fourth hit single in the Netherlands.
