THE SIXTIES

At the start of 1962, The Jumping Jewels released a record that showcased a noticeably improved “tonal color,” thanks to their new Fender guitars and amplifiers.

The track “Africa” (originally by Jörgen Ingmann) was originally a South African composition by Charles Segal and Anton de Waal. The Jumping Jewels’ version performed so well that it climbed to number eight on the hit parade. In reality, the record was a “double hit,” as their rendition of “Twilight Time” (The Platters) also became immensely popular. The band performed “Africa” on the television program Rooster, hosted by Lonneke Hoogland.

In January 1962, the first record featuring singer Johnny Lion was also released. The label still read: “The Jumping Jewels – vocal: Johnny Lion.” It featured covers of “My Bonnie (Lies Over The Ocean)” (The Beatles), under the title “Bonnie Rock,” and “C’mon Everybody” (Eddie Cochran).
