ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard dies at 77

Frank Beard, the drummer for the American rock band ZZ Top, died on Tuesday at the age of 77. A spokesperson for the musician announced the news. Beard had been ill for some time.

Beard passed away in the presence of his family at a hospice on a ranch in Richmond, a city in the US state of Texas.

No cause of death has been announced. Earlier this month, several ZZ Top performances were canceled due to Beard’s health issues.

“Today, Elwood and I have lost a good friend and collaborator,” bandmate Billy Gibbons said in a statement to Variety. “His signature rhythm was essential in keeping ZZ Top at the top. The band he was a part of for six decades will continue just as he would have wanted.”

Beard had been a member of ZZ Top since 1969, alongside guitarist and vocalist Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill. Hill died in 2021 at the age of 72. ZZ Top became famous for hit songs such as Gimme All Your Lovin’, Sharp Dressed Man, and Rough Boy.
