Background

It has been fifty years since the Swedish pop group ABBA managed to conquer the hearts of Europe with the song ‘Waterloo’. Their career went through the roof after their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. In addition to this popular pop group, there are other artists who owe their successful musical careers – among other things – to the music competition. They are listed below.

ABBA

On April 6, 1974, pop group ABBA, consisting of Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, won the Eurovision Song Contest. Their song ‘Waterloo’ became a worldwide hit. This was followed by a series of other hits, such as ‘Gimme, Gimme, Gimme’, ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘Dancing Queen’.

Celine Dion

Although Céline Dion was already an emerging artist in her home country Canada, it was her participation in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988 that made her breakthrough worldwide. She represented Switzerland with the French-language song ‘Ne partez pas sans moi’.

Julio Iglesias

The Spanish-speaking Julio Iglesias was already a big name in Latin America, but became more famous in 1970 after his participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. He managed to take fourth place with the song ‘Gwendolyne’.

Duncan Laurence

Duncan Laurence was an internationally unknown name before his participation in the music competition. In the Netherlands he had already participated in The Voice. The singer managed to surprise with his song ‘Arcade’ and even took home the title in 2020.

Loreen

Swedish singer Loreen has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest not once, but twice. In 2012 she already managed to score a world hit with her song ‘Euphoria’. She also won the music competition that year. In 2023 she managed to impress again, but with the song ‘Tattoo’. Once again she took home the win.

Davina Michelle

Although Davina Michelle did not participate in the Eurovision Song Contest as a candidate, her guest appearance in 2021 turned out to be a great success. She managed to score a hit worldwide with her song ‘The Power of Water’.

Bonnie Tyler

Singer Bonnie Tyler represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 with the song ‘Believe in Me’. Although she did not emerge as the winner, she managed to put herself back on the map as a rock singer with her participation.
